[check against delivery] Hi everyone, I last came to EMF in 2014, I see it has got quite a bit bigger! I’m here today to talk about the Post Office Inquiry, and specifically my small unofficial involvement around the transcripts of its hearings. Firstly, has everyone heard about what has been called the “worst miscarriage of justice in British legal history”? In summary, over a number of years the Post Office pursued thousands of sub-postmasters for shortfalls in their accounts, which had been caused by faults in Horizon, the software running in the branches written and run by Fujitsu. More than 900 sub-postmasters were convicted of theft, fraud and false accounting based on faulty Horizon data between 1999 and 2015. Other sub-postmasters were prosecuted but not convicted, forced to cover Horizon shortfalls with their own money, or had their contracts terminated. Many faced bankruptcy or lost their livelihoods, leading to stress, illness, family breakdown and even suicide.
