    1.   1727:

That's all from our live coverage of the hacking report. You can follow the story as it develops this evening on our news site.

    2.   1725:

Mr Graham does not believe the failure to achieve a cross-party consensus on the report's conclusions will mean it will be taken any less seriously by the public. "I would have thought it was a risky judgement by the Conservative members not to join in with the judgement but it does show how politicised the phone hacking scandal has become," he tells the BBC.

    3.   Rupert Murdoch biographer Michael Wolff

writes in the Guardian: Rupert Murdoch is as finished in the United Kingdom, like Conrad Black and Robert Maxwell before him. The only difference is that they can't quite get him into jail. This, in a sense, means his agony is going to be prolonged.

    4.   1722:

More from Sir Alistair Graham, ex-chairman of committee on standards in public life. "Labour and Lib-Dem members have joined up together in this report," he tells the BBC. "That is a bit of a first for an issue of such importance."

    5.   1722: Hugh Pym chief economics correspondent

adds that the language used in the committee's report is very interesting as it echoes Ofcom's "fit and proper" test. "Ofcom has to exercise its authority with due diligence. They could order James Murdoch to be removed from the board which would have a huge impact," he says.

    6.   J Hawkins

comments on the BBC News website: The evidence is that Mr Murdoch has successfully built and run an incredibly successful business. The people accusing him of being unfit are neither in charge of a well run entity (the UK economy) nor have they established due oversight to avoid misconduct from members of the press.

    7.   1717: Hugh Pym chief economics correspondent

says the key thing is how shareholders in News Corp in New York and shareholders in BSkyB in the UK will react. "We've seen revolts in the past when non-Murdoch family shareholders either abstained or voted against the election of James Murdoch. The question now is how these outside shareholders exert their position," he says.

    8.   1716:

Sir Alistair Graham, former chairman of the committee on standards in public life, says it is a "damning report." He adds if people had misled parliament there should be some punishment.

    9.   kayakrage

comments on the BBC News website: It takes two to tango but in this case it was three: press, police & politicians. Just like a child if you let them get away with it for too long it becomes the norm so thats all the press did!

    10.    Norman Smith Chief political correspondent, BBC News Channel

  •   Alex from Bagshott

emails: The report sounds like lynchmob justice. I am not sure who comes out of it all worse, Murdoch for not knowing what was happening, or Labour, for attempting to destroy the non-leftwing press.

  •   Jason from Coulsdon

emails: Let's not forget that Labour swept these allegations under the carpet whilst in office so adopting a holier than thou stance now. Political payback from Labour because Murdoch didn't back Brown.

emails: It is disappointing that the investigating committee has split on party political lines. All our political parties have been complicit in eliciting the Murdoch group's favours. It is doubly disappointing that the Conservative party have muddied the water by voting against the majority view of the committee.

  •   1642:

The Metropolitan Police Service says it "notes" the MPs' report on News International and phone hacking. "The investigation into phone hacking and related matters continues to follow evidence of suspected criminality and considerable resources are dedicated to this," it adds.

There is a lot of comment on Twitter over how The Times - a Rupert Murdoch owned paper - is covering the story. The Guardian's Esther Addley has taken a screen grab of the paper's web front page with the comment: "This is, by any measure, an astonishing thing".

Comments on the BBC News website: Utter hypocrisy and double standards from the MP's on the committee. It's laughable how the MP's from both the Labour party and the Liberal Democrat party can decide whether Rupert Murdoch is 'fit to run a major international firm', when majority of them were involved in the expenses scandal only a year or so back.

Labour MP and committee member Tom Watson tells the BBC that there are more unanswered questions to be answered by Rupert Murdoch and News Corp. "What was the extent of computer hacking? and what did the company do with private investigators?"

Committee chairman and Conservative MP John Whittingale tells the BBC he welcomes the fact that News Corp is now co-operating with various inquiries and that Rupert Murdoch has apologised to the victims: "but it is very belated and while the company is, at last, doing the right thing, for so long they sought to conceal and deny there was any involvement".
